Formalities to travel to Sweden with a dog

Come on, friends, if you are ready to go on a trip to Sweden with your dog, then we tell you everything you need to know! Your faithful companion is welcome, but there are a few rules to respect to spend a stay in complete serenity. In this article, we give you all the details to travel with your dog in Sweden without headaches.

1. Vaccinations for dogs

Your dog must be up to date with his vaccinations and vaccinated against rabies. If this is the first injection of your pet's rabies vaccine, the effective date of the vaccine is 21 days later (so remember to check your travel dates in this case). Proof of vaccination will appear in your dog's passport.

2. Dog passports

If you are traveling with your dog from the European Union, you must obtain a pet passport from your veterinarian before leaving. This document contains your dog's health and vaccination information, as well as his identification.

3. Anti-rabies titration

Anti-rabies titration is not mandatory to go to Sweden, but if you travel a lot with a pet, it is better to do so. The result of the rabies titration is valid for life provided that the rabies vaccination is kept valid (vaccine reminders made within the required time).

4. Micro-chip

Your dog must be identified with an electronic chip. This chip must comply with ISO standards and it must be readable by scanners in Sweden. Make sure with your veterinarian that the chip is clearly legible before leaving.

5. Quarantine

There is no quarantine period for European Union dogs on entry into Sweden.

6. Transport

When you travel by plane to Sweden with your dog, it must be transported in a crate (sout) or a flexible transport bag (cabin). The size and type of container depend on the weight and height of your dog. For my part, I have a chihuahua, so he always travels in a cabin in a flexible bag, placed at my feet. If you are lucky and the seat next to you is unoccupied, you can put your dog's bag on it. If your dog travels in the hold, he must be in an IATA approved cage that you can find at different sellers (amazon, pet store, etc.). Be sure to check that your dog can travel in the cabin and the requirements with your airline before traveling. NB: To simply check if a company accepts dogs in the cabin and what are the conditions, type in your search bar "[your company] cabin dog" For example, with Air France, the maximum weight for a dog in the cabin is 8kg with the bag and the company must be notified at least 48 hours in advance (I advise them to notify them as soon as your plane ticket is purchased).

In the end, if you are like me and you can't consider going on a trip without your faithful four-legged companion, traveling to Sweden with your dog is well worth it. Of course, it requires a little preparation and planning, but by following the formalities mentioned above, you can make sure that your dog is ready for this incredible adventure in Sweden, without stress and safely. So, pack your luggage, take out the leash and discover this beautiful country in Northern Europe with your best friend by your side!
